M-Spot: Superstorm Sandy vs. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma

Doing Well By Doing Good….Superstorm Sandy vs. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma

Remember the infamous quote, “I voted for it, before I voted against it.” Well, let’s try it in reverse. I voted against it, before I voted for it. I will never forget New York’s 2nd Congressional District representative Peter King’s ire at his congressional colleagues who voted against relief for Superstorm Sandy. Now, the citizens of Texas, Florida and Georgia and their elected leaders are dealing with their own disasters in the form of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Some of those elected officials that voted ‘no’ and even the ones that voted ‘yes’ are counting on their colleagues in the House and Senate to support them in their time of need.

To the point… much like I discussed in my last blog, now is the time for non-profits to step in and step up. Make no mistake, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the disaster that followed require assistance and financial support from the federal government. But, non-profits have a significant role to play and now is the time for them to engage in meaningful ways. And here’s the cool thing… citizens and companies across the country are stepping up. They are looking for non-profits who are serious, accountable and capable to send resources to.

Charity Navigator, a non-profit that has rated over 8,000 non-profits, developed a list of the best non-profits to contribute to in support of the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Charity Navigator values organizations where most of an individual’s donation makes it straight to the victim and where there is transparency in audited financial statements.

Top charitable organizations include:

  • Greater Houston Community Foundation

  • Houston Food Bank

  • United Way of Greater Houston

  • South Texas Blood and Tissue Center

  • Global Giving

  • Food Bank of Corpus Christi

  • Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

  • LGBTQ Disaster Relief Fund

  • Catholic Relief Services

  • Direct Relief

  • Heart to Heart International

Even if you are not one of these non-profits, where can your non-profit step in and step up? If not for Hurricane Harvey or Irma relief, relief in your own community. Where has your organization engaged to ensure that you are doing well by doing good?
